How Nandrolone Phenylpropionate Affects LH
NPP suppresses LH to undetectable levels, and nandrolone is among the more persistently suppressive anabolic compounds. The short ester clears in days, but that does not shorten recovery: hypothalamic-pituitary recovery depends on how long the axis was suppressed, not on how fast the drug leaves.
The Mechanism
Nandrolone phenylpropionate delivers identical nandrolone to nandrolone decanoate, so axis suppression is the same:

Androgen receptor-mediated negative feedback: Nandrolone binds the androgen receptor in the hypothalamus and pituitary, reducing GnRH pulse frequency and pituitary responsiveness, and LH falls accordingly.

Progesterone receptor activity adds to it: Nandrolone is a 19-nortestosterone derivative with meaningful progesterone receptor agonism, and progestogenic activity contributes independently to gonadotrophin suppression. This is one reason 19-nor compounds have a reputation for suppression that is harder to recover from than testosterone alone.

Intratesticular testosterone collapses: LH suppression removes the drive for Leydig cell steroidogenesis. Intratesticular testosterone, normally 50 to 100 times serum concentrations, falls by an order of magnitude, and spermatogenesis depends on that intratesticular concentration rather than on serum testosterone.

Weak aromatisation does not spare the axis: Nandrolone aromatises poorly, but androgen receptor feedback plus progestogenic activity is more than sufficient. Every non-aromatising or weakly aromatising androgen studied causes full gonadotrophin suppression.

Why nandrolone-only cycles are a poor idea: Suppressing the axis removes endogenous testosterone and therefore endogenous oestradiol, and nandrolone replaces neither adequately. It is also reduced to dihydronandrolone rather than DHT, a weaker androgen, so androgenic support of erectile function is poor. A testosterone base at or above the nandrolone dose is the standard approach for good reason.
What the ester changes: clearance in days rather than weeks. This means side effects stop sooner. It does not mean the axis recovers sooner.
Expected Changes
Any meaningful dose:
- LH falls to undetectable, typically below 0.1 IU/L, within 2 to 4 weeks
- FSH follows the same course
- Testicular volume decreases over 3 to 6 months of continuous use
Recovery:
- LH recovery after stopping nandrolone typically takes 3 to 6 months, and 19-nor compounds have a reputation for slower recovery than testosterone alone
- Spermatogenesis recovery typically takes 6 to 12 months, longer with prolonged use and in older men
- The phenylpropionate ester clears in days, but this affects when the suppressive signal ends, not how long the axis takes to restart afterwards
Compared with decanoate: NPP's clearance advantage means the suppressive drug is gone within days of your last injection, whereas decanoate continues releasing for weeks. That shortens the total suppression window by a few weeks on an otherwise identical protocol, which is a genuine but modest benefit.
hCG note: hCG acts directly at the LH receptor and does not raise measured LH. A suppressed LH on an hCG protocol tells you nothing about whether the hCG is working. Testicular volume and semen analysis are the meaningful endpoints.
Monitoring Guidance
Baseline LH and FSH before any androgen use. This distinguishes primary hypogonadism, where LH is high and the testis has failed, from secondary hypogonadism, where the pituitary or hypothalamic signal is the problem. Once exogenous androgens are on board that distinction cannot be made without a lengthy washout.
A baseline semen analysis is inexpensive and cannot be reconstructed retrospectively if fertility may matter later.
On cycle:
- Routine LH monitoring has little value. It will be undetectable.
- Check total testosterone and oestradiol instead, which tell you whether your testosterone base is adequate.
- If you are running NPP without a testosterone base, check oestradiol. That protocol produces oestradiol deficiency, and the symptoms are joint pain, loss of libido, low mood and poor sleep.
During a restart:
- LH, FSH and total testosterone at 4 to 6 weeks after the last injection, then every 6 to 8 weeks.
- Semen analysis at 3 and 6 months if fertility is the goal.
- Recovery is slow, and a single suppressed reading at 6 weeks is not a failure.
Management Strategies
Always run a testosterone base at or above the nandrolone dose. This addresses both the axis problem and the erectile function problem in one decision, and it is the most consistently repeated piece of practical advice about this compound for good reason.
If fertility matters:
- Cryopreserve sperm before starting. It is the only fully reliable option.
- Concurrent hCG at 250 to 500 IU two or three times weekly maintains intratesticular testosterone and preserves spermatogenesis in many men, and is far easier than restoring it afterwards.
- 19-nor compounds have a reputation for particularly stubborn recovery, so this matters more here than on a testosterone-only protocol.
Do not expect the short ester to protect the axis. Recovery depends on the duration of suppression and your age, not on how quickly the drug clears. NPP shortens the tail by weeks, not months.
Keep runs shorter rather than longer: Duration of suppression is the variable most strongly associated with slow recovery, and it is entirely under your control.
