Folate
Other marker
Folate
Category: Other
Unit: nmol/L
B vitamin essential for DNA synthesis and red blood cell production.
PED Notes
Important for red blood cell production, DNA synthesis, and homocysteine metabolism. Adequate levels support recovery. Critical alongside B12 and B6 for keeping homocysteine levels in check (elevated homocysteine is an independent cardiovascular risk factor).
Supplements:
- Methylfolate (5-MTHF) -- 800mcg/day (active form, bypasses MTHFR gene variants)
Note: Usually sufficient with a balanced diet but worth supplementing if homocysteine is elevated
