Sperm Aggregation
Sperm clumping to mucus, debris or non-motile cells, rather than to each other. Less specific than agglutination.
PED Notes
Usually non-specific and much less concerning than agglutination, but persistent aggregation alongside raised white cells can point to genital tract inflammation or infection, which is itself a driver of DNA fragmentation. Read it with the rest of the sample rather than on its own.
When high
Non-specific in isolation. It matters when it appears alongside other findings.
- With raised leukocytes: suggests genital tract inflammation or infection. Worth a semen culture and a clinician's opinion.
- With agglutination: see Agglutination, which is the more specific finding.
- On its own, with everything else normal: generally not acted on.
