How Primobolan Affects SHBG
Methenolone binds SHBG less strongly than testosterone or DHT, but like other androgens it is expected to lower SHBG, raising the free fraction of testosterone and oestradiol. No study gives a Primo-specific figure.
The Mechanism
SHBG (sex hormone-binding globulin) is made in the liver and carries testosterone, DHT and oestradiol in the blood.
- Androgens suppress hepatic SHBG production, and very low SHBG is a recognised clue to anabolic steroid use (Anawalt, 2019).
- Methenolone itself binds SHBG less strongly than testosterone or DHT (Saartok, 1984), so it competes for the protein without being one of its strongest binders.
- A single injection of nandrolone, a different non-oral androgen, produced only a small and transient SHBG fall in healthy men (Garevik, 2016), which hints that injectable androgens may lower SHBG more modestly than orals. That is a single-dose study, and it has not been tested for Primo.
Expected Changes
Injectable Primo with testosterone: expect SHBG to fall from your baseline. Users report SHBG that "really dropped" after adding Primo, but rarely post the number.
Oral Primo (acetate): oral androgens pass through the liver first and are generally thought to lower SHBG more. This is unmeasured for methenolone.
Consequence: as SHBG falls, more of your testosterone and oestradiol is free, so total testosterone can understate your real androgen exposure.
Monitoring Guidance
Measure SHBG at baseline and 5 to 6 weeks after adding Primo, and read calculated free testosterone rather than total testosterone.
If SHBG is very low (single digits), some labs will not calculate free testosterone. Ask for the raw values and calculate it yourself.
A product check: if SHBG, HDL and LH do not move at all after 6 weeks at 400 mg a week or more, the vial may be underdosed or inert.
Management Strategies
Low SHBG is expected, not an emergency. It is a sign of androgen load. Use it to interpret your other numbers, not as a target.
If you are a man with naturally low SHBG, expect a small total testosterone number to carry more free hormone than it looks.
