Insulin
Exogenous insulin (Humalog/NovoRapid rapid-acting, Humulin-R regular, Lantus long-acting). The most anabolic hormone. Used in advanced bodybuilding for nutrient partitioning and muscle growth.
Overview
Exogenous insulin (Humalog/NovoRapid rapid-acting, Humulin-R regular, Lantus long-acting). The most anabolic hormone. Used in advanced bodybuilding for nutrient partitioning and muscle growth.
Dramatically lowers blood glucose (hypoglycaemia risk — potentially fatal), suppresses endogenous insulin production temporarily, can worsen insulin sensitivity with chronic use, may affect HbA1c readings, promotes lipogenesis if calories are excessive, no direct effect on liver enzymes or hormones
Compound Guide
Types commonly used in bodybuilding:
- Rapid-acting (Humalog/NovoRapid/Fiasp): Onset 10-15 min, peak 1-2h, duration 3-5h
- Regular (Humulin-R): Onset 30 min, peak 2-3h, duration 5-8h
- Long-acting (Lantus/Levemir): For advanced users only — flat profile over 20-24h
Dosage:
- Beginner (rapid-acting post-workout): 5 IU with 50-75g fast carbs + 40g protein
- Intermediate: 5-10 IU post-workout, titrated based on glucose response
- Advanced: 10-15+ IU with meals, often combined with GH
Administration:
- SubQ injection, abdomen or love handles
- Insulin syringe (100 IU/mL)
- ALWAYS have fast-acting carbs immediately available (glucose tablets, juice, dextrose)
Key Notes:
- MOST DANGEROUS compound in bodybuilding — hypoglycaemia can cause seizures, coma, and death
- Rule of 10: consume at least 10g carbs per 1 IU of rapid-acting insulin
- NEVER use insulin without a glucose meter — check blood glucose before, during, and after
- NEVER use insulin alone — always with food/carbs
- NEVER use insulin and go to sleep during its active window
- NEVER start with long-acting insulin — rapid-acting only, so mistakes resolve within hours
- Synergistic with GH: GH causes insulin resistance, insulin counteracts it while both promote anabolism
- Chronic use causes insulin resistance and can lead to type 2 diabetes
- Monitor: fasting glucose, HbA1c, fasting insulin, C-peptide — before, during, and after use
- Signs of hypoglycaemia: shakiness, sweating, confusion, dizziness, rapid heartbeat — eat carbs IMMEDIATELY
