Basophils
Haematology marker
Basophils
Category: Haematology
Unit: x10^9/L
Rarest white blood cell type. Involved in allergic and inflammatory responses.
PED Notes
Not typically affected by AAS. Usually present in very small numbers. Rarely clinically significant in isolation.
Clinical note:
- Basophils are the rarest WBC type and are rarely clinically significant in isolation
- Mild elevation (0.1-0.2 x10^9/L) is almost never meaningful on its own
- Persistent elevation >0.2 x10^9/L may be seen with allergic conditions, hypothyroidism, or rarely myeloproliferative disorders
- No specific supplement or lifestyle intervention targets basophils directly
- Interpret in the context of the full WBC differential and clinical picture
